For good clean website design I use HTML and CSS style sheets to control the 'look' of the site.
This gives good design consistency between pages and enables alterations to the design to be made quickly.
For manipulating and creating images I generally use photoshop and fireworks.
For the 'nuts and bolts' programming behind the scenes I use PHP to create dynamic database driven pages.
PHP is a truly flexible and powerful language and I have used it to create updatable image galleries, a simple site search engine,
a forum and many other user interfaces and content management systems.
For the database end of things I use MYSQL which fits in very nicely with PHP.
